Situated along Garfield Parkway, just steps from the Boardwalk and Bandstand, Sea Crest has become an iconic place for shoppers, browsers and pedestrians over the decades. Sea Crest is located in one of the oldest structures in downtown Bethany Beach. More than half a century old, it was one of the few buildings on the town’s shoreline to survive the legendary Storm of 1962. Originally a motel, the property was sold in 1976 to Freda Kimmel who added the boutique and gift shop. When she retired in 1991, Brian McKinney became the owner and Liz Hammond stepped in as manager. Today, Liz and her husband Eddie Hammond have taken over the store and are carrying on the stores tradition as an eclectic venue for such items as home decor, holiday gifts, hand painted glassware, unusual wall-clocks, fashionable women’s clothing and accessories, and jewelry. There is something for everyone, in every price range. The store continues to act as broker for the works of several local artists such as Carol Dyer, Barbara Deitrick, Abraxas and Rosemary Carol. Proprietors, of Sea Crest, Liz and Eddie do all of the buying for the store. They travel to trade shows from Atlantic City to Las Vegas to make sure they pick up the most trendy items that will also appeal to their vast clientele from year-round locals to vacationers and second-home owners who spend their time here at the beach. And, they aren’t content to stay in the background. The couple are always on hand to interact with the customers, which Liz says is “The most fun of all”.
